Love Story

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛She was born in a middle-class family in China. Her parents loved her very much, but they didn’t have time to take care of her. They were too busy with their own work and business. After she was 4-year-old, she started to stay in the kindergarten all the time.
She missed her parents, and she wanted to please them. She took all suggestions from her parents and teachers, followed all instructions, and made all the efforts to be a good child. In her little heart, making trouble to her parents was the last thing to do, she wanted her parents to focus their valuable time on their work and family, and she wanted her parents to be happy. She made that! She was always a perfect child.

After she grew up, she valued self-discipline. She believed that “self-discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.” She was always a good student and a good employee. In her memory, there was only one big disagreement between her parents and her: her marriage.

She fell in love with a young guy in college. He was handsome, intelligent and kind. In fact, what attracted her most was his deep love to her. They had such a good time together, full of sweet memories. But when the graduation day came, both of them became silent: They would go back to their hometowns, which meant they would live in two different cities.

There were 400 kilometers between their cities. And the young man did not give up their love. He started to visit her city biweekly or monthly depending on his working schedule. To save both money and time, he chose the night train. He took the train at 10 p.m. on Friday night and arrived at her city at 6 o’clock in the morning. They spent the whole weekend together. They went to shopping together, they had dinner together, or they went to all the travel spots together, like all the young people in love. On Sunday afternoon, he took another train back to his city at 5 p.m.. None of them remembered how many times they had stood together waiting for the train; the train station was the most familiar spot for both of them. They also called each other after 9 p.m. every day, because the longer distance call between cities was half-priced after 9 p.m..

Two years past. Her mom said: “Well, he is really a nice guy. But we want you home; you can have a better future in our city.” That’s true. She had a good job and an easy life in her city. As a computer engineer in a national bank, her boyfriend also had a good job and an easy life in his city. What to do?

One day, he called her, “Let’s go to Canada. We can live together and we can have a better future together!” Looking at him in his eyes, full of joy and excitement, she said “Yes!” They were still young at that time and they wanted challenges. And the most important thing was that they could get married and live together! After two more years, they landed on Person Airport, Toronto.

Like all the immigrants, their lives were not easy. To support their lives and education, both of them took part-time jobs. She successfully completed a specialized honored bachelor degree, and he completed his master degree with excellent grades. After she graduated, she got a job in a reputable bank and started to support their family. They struggled to balance their budget after they paid back all their student loans. But they never regretted because they were always hopeful about the future. Finally, all the hard work was paid off. On the seventh year after their immigration, they had their big and comfortable home together, and they had two beautiful and smart kids together!

Well, love is not all about flowers, money, diamond rings or fame; it is about responsibility, promise, self-discipline, and hard work. You make your word, and you keep it. And for most of the Chinese, family is always a big house, with beloved ones living together, hand in hand, heart to heart and side by side forever!

-----Her parents loved her very much, but they didn't have time to take care of her. => Her parents loved her very much, but had little time to care for her.
didn't have time => had little time 细微的差别。take care of 和 care for差不多的意思。

-----They were too busy with their work and business.
They were too busy with their work and career.

-----After she was 4-year-old, she started to stay in the kindergarten all the time => After she turned 4 years old, she was sent to a boarding kindergarten, only going home on weekends.
      1. 4-year-old可以作noun 或 adjective。
e.g She is just a 4-year-old. The 4-year-old is drawing (within a context).
      作adjective
      e.g She is a 4-year-old girl.

      2. After she was (a) 4-year-old (After she was 4 years old)
      After she was ...

      3. she started to stay in the kindergarten all the time.
a.什么叫stay in the kindergarten all the time?
      b.She started.

      4. only going home on weekends这一句加不加,看audience.

-----She took all suggestions from her parents and teachers, followed all instructions, and made all the efforts to be a good child. =>She listened to her parents and teachers, followed all instructions and rules, and tried her best to be a good child.

-----In her little heart, making trouble to her parents was the last thing to do => In her little heart, making trouble for parents was the last thing to do.
"making trouble for parents"是general的行为指代.

-----she wanted her parents to focus their valuable time on their work and family,

还有,逻辑上,连孩子都没时间管,什么叫focus on ... work and family?

She understood that parents had to focus on their work and provide for the family.

-----She made that! She was always a perfect child. => And she did just that! She had always been a perfect child.

      ----------------------

      • You are wonderful!
【Reminder】: Please do not comment on posts regarding mistakes or errors, unless you are invited. 8.13 13:32 (#8928347@0)

        1- didn't have time & had little time
2- They were too busy with their work and business.
3- -----After she was 4-year-old, she started to stay in the kindergarten all the time
        =》turned 4 year old 好,更常用。
=》stay in the kindergarten all the time – 中国式的全托,我们小时候的流行,周日回家。 你改的 “she was sent to a boarding kindergarten” is much better,

4- she wanted her parents to focus their valuable time on their work and family,
这句确实要改,我本意其实想说: --She wanted her parents to focus their valuable time on their work and leisure.
-Making trouble for her parents 好!

        5. take care of her V.S. care for her 我用前者,因为 take care 有 watch over 和 be responsible for的意思,更适用在小孩身上;care for -似乎更强调意愿,偏好?

      • 原文第四句:After she was 4-year-old, ...
After she was 4-year-old, she started to stay in the kindergarten all the time.问题多,englearner(英学妹妹)已经解决了大部分,但她还说"After she was 4... -softface(探长); 14:44 (#8940207@0) reply more
4 years old的区间是一年,After是用于从某个事件或某个时间(可大可小)节点之后的一段(开区间)的时间,after she was four就是after the age of four就是after the year of her age of four,那就是5岁才去幼稚园,那就干脆说At the age of five好了; -softface(探长); 14:45 (#8940210@0) reply more
At the age of four这种较为“模糊的”表达, -softface(探长); 14:45 (#8940211@0) reply more
        意思是,入读幼稚园的时间可以是4岁中的任何时候(When she was four也是不涉及具体时间的4岁时),而Englearner改成的After she turned four...

Her parents loved her very much, but they didn't have time to take care of her.
They were too busy with their own work and business.
那么是谁在照顾这个newborn(0-3个月的新生儿)、infant(3-12个月婴儿/(或7岁以下))、toddler(1-4岁)呢?
She was born in a middle-class family in China.
    • She...She...She...
    • Great writing, sounds like you two are among the most successful couples.
